One Step at a Time

I swim.  Actually I swim a lot.  As some of you will remember from my exploits in Las Vegas last summer.

I’m totally addicted to that wonderful feeling of gliding through the cool water, washing all my stress and the chaos of my day away.

I swim at least 3 times a week.  My goal is to change my life so I can swim every day.

Every week I swim between 3 miles / 4.5km / 90 minutes / 180 lengths and 10km / 6 miles / 200 minutes / 400 lengths.

I can’t claim to be lightning fast, but I’m not exactly the dawdling, middle-aged lady breast stroker.  I can do killer crawl, rather dodgy tumble turns and I have biceps defined enough to challenge Madonna!

How do I do it?  How do I get in the pool and swim up and down for up to 100 plus lengths?  How do I wrap my head around 30 to 45 minutes of continuous hard work?  How do I keep it going week in and week out?

I chunk it down.  I break it up. I take it one step at a time.

I take it from a  huge, overwhelming, daunting target.  And chunk it down into small, easy, achievable bits.

I take it 10 lengths, 5 minutes or when I need to, just one stroke or one breath at a time.

It could easily be 10 seconds at a time, 10 minutes, 10 hours or even 10 days at a time.  It could be doing something 10 times, or maybe 5, or even 3.  It all depends on what you want to achieve.

It’s a case of seeing you can just put one foot in front of the other.  It’s about just writing the next line or even the next word.  It’s about feeling everything drop in to place.  It’s about hearing the bells ring.  It’s all about chunking down to succeed.  To reach your objective.  To achieve your dreams.

Which dream are you going to turn in to the reality of your success first?

  1. Love it Jacqui. Funny how when the student is ready the teacher appears! I’ve been getting so many signs about taking what to me seems a daunting task step by step.
    Thank you 🙂
