A New Way Forward – Living by Values Instead of Goals for 2012

I’ve rebelled this year.  I’ve said bah humbug to setting new year resolutions.  I’ve said bah humbug to beating myself up, day in and day out, because I think I’m not achieving as much as I should be or I’m not achieving as much as other people.  And this year I’m saying bah humbug to goals.

Did I hear you gasp?  Haven’t I ranted on for the past year about defining your outcomes, setting goals and knowing exactly what step you’ll be taking towards those tomorrow, the day after and even the day after that?  Otherwise you’ll be that ship without a rudder?

There again perhaps you’re still distracted by my overuse of bah humbug in the first paragraph.

So I’ve decided I’m going to work on living my values this year.  I’m going to test out something different.  And I’m absolutely convinced that I’m going to still achieve BIG things.  I’m just going to be nice to myself in the process.

If you want to find out what your values are go back and read The Heart of Values and Drivers in Reverse.

But it’s not just about values.  Inspired by Gretchen Ruben and The Happiness Project I’m going to live my values along with 10 personal commandments.  I have to say my non-religious self isn’t too fond of that word ‘commandment’.  But I couldn’t find a better on in my end-of-week brain-fried state.

So here they are in no particular order:

#1 Breathe deep and relax, come on relax, those shoulders.

#2 Appreciate “the moment” – be in the room.

#3 Grow a little each day – read, watch, listen, think, learn.

#4 Believe – who else will?

#5 Be a cheerleader.

#6 Be me.

#7 Have fun, remember to smile!

#8 Do what NEEDS to be done, nothing more

#9 Simplicity… is king.  Less is more.

#10 Think big, think bigger and think bigger again.

What are you going to do differently this year?  What would your 10 commandments be?

  1. Good for you! I am in absolute agreement as you know! You’ll have a great year as a result!

    • Thanks Rebecca! I’d drafted this before I read your post – we’re definitely thinking along the same lines for this year. Onward and upward without goals and while being nice to ourselves! It’s going to be a great year…
