Flexibility is king. So say the NLP Principles for Success. The more flexible you can be, the more likely it is that you’ll achieve your goal and your desired outcome. If whatever you do doesn’t work, use your flexibility to try a new route until you find a path that does work successfully.
All well and good you might say, but what the heck does that have to do with OSINTOTS?
Let’s start with the basics. What is an OSINTOT? Is it some little known South America jungle tribe? Is it the new kids toy that they’ll be dying to receive this Christmas, that will be either impossible to find or will require standing in huge lines with other stressed parents, at insane times of the morning, to buy one ‘while stocks last’? Or is it some sort of magic sweet that can make you irresistible to the opposite sex?
Sorry folks, it’s none of the above.
And what does an OSINTOT, whatever it is, have to do with the pictures I’ve posted here of Caerphilly Castle? Built back in the 1200’s by an Anglo-Norman lord and actually the second biggest castle in the UK, behind Windsor.
As you’ll see in the first picture one of the towers leans out to the left at an angle over twice that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa! Quite amazing it’s still standing considering it’s been like that for almost 400 years! So here’s the story….
The castle was being used back in the 1600’s, in the days of Oliver Cromwell and the English Civil Wars. Troops in the castle were using that particular tower to store gunpowder and the like. Until one day they managed to blow up their own munitions! Yep, you did read that correctly. The damage to the castle was not the result of enemy bombardment, but rather a bit of accidental self-sabotage. Can you imagine how the poor soul that was to blame must have felt? And what he must have said to himself when he realised the unforseen results of his actions? Oh Shit I Never Thought of That… and hence the term OSINTOT!
In the words of Forest Gump “My Mama used to say – life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you gonna get.” OSINTOTs are unavoidable. We don’t have a crystal ball to foresee the future and so things you hadn’t thought of or considered will happen from time to time.
Being flexible will help you deal successfully with anything life throws at you – or more likely that you throw at yourself inadvertently! NLP trains you to develop and nurture your flexibility in the way you think, the way you communicate and the way you behave. As the Law of Requisite Variety (one of the presuppositions underpinning NLP) states – it will be the person with the most flexibility that will control the system. And it will be the person with the most flexibility that will achieve the greatest success.
How could you be more flexible in your life to support your quest for success?
